Music and the sacred are essential features of the human condition wherever, whenever and in whatever way it manifests itself. Based on experiential experience, expression and communication, the various symbolic and practical bridges between music and the sacred are distinguished. The ethnographic examples in the course cover a wide range of musical themes from Hinduism, Sufism, Shamanism, and monotheistic religious traditions. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the anthropological study of the religious phenomenon and expressions of the “sacred” in the field of ethnomusicology.
